A dramatic, blustery storm passed through Father’s Day, splitting trees and tossing their limbs, literally dumping a bucket of rain, and knocking our grill off the back patio. In spite of the drama, all that rain refreshed our plants and left the back garden a magical wonderland this morning. My daughter spent some time alone exploring, discovering ladybug after ladybug, and then her real prize, a ladybug larva. We are always excited to know they are making babies.
My daughter was able to save one of these for a research project week on insects during her kindergarten year. She was so proud of the fact that she was the ONLY kid to bring in a ladybug larva, and had a lot of fun teaching her classmates about their life cycle.
This link to the beetle’s family Coccinellidae on Bugguide.net is a fun-filled page noting their extensive diversity.
